International Podiatry Day: 8th October

International Podiatry Day: 8th October

Our feet have an important job keeping us steady on the ground! But with them being as far away from our heads as possible, they’re unsurprisingly easy to forget about (it’s not always fun being down there!). It’s good to remember that our feet serve an essential purpose. They not only help us move about with ease (we wouldn’t get very far without them), but they can also be crucial indicators of our overall health and well-being. This is why foot health is SO important, and exactly why, on the 8th October, we celebrate International Podiatry Day!

What is International Podiatry Day?

Celebrated on the 8th October, International Podiatry Day celebrates and raises awareness of the podiatry profession and all things foot health related. From the general public to government bodies and health professionals, the day focuses on spreading foot health awareness to everyone around the globe. The day is celebrated and recognised in 26 countries, all who actively participate in sharing their valuable knowledge concerning foot health.

A Brief History

This special day was created by the International Federation of Podiatrists. The federation is a non-profit organisation that has been dedicated in advancing podiatry worldwide since 1947. The key aim for the federation is to raise awareness for foot health all around the globe. Leaders in podiatry share their knowledge of foot health and what they love about their profession.

  • 1 in 1000 babies are born with an extra toe
  • Ever wondered why your feet are so ticklish? It’s because the soles of your feet have a high concentration of sensitive nerve receptors that are located near to the skin’s surface – making them super susceptible to that ticklish feeling!
  • It can take up to 12-18 months for a toenail to completely regrow

You might think discussing feet can be a little bit gross, but you shouldn’t feel embarrassed. After all, we all have them! Everyone experiences foot problems at some point in their life. Talking honestly about the importance of foot health will educate those who need it. And most importantly, keep your feet nice and healthy! Happy International Podiatry Day!
